Ghost Capital Of England

The City of Derby is the "Ghost Capital of England", an intriguing thought. This section of the City of Derby web site will bring together all the information available on the city's spookiest places, where ghostly presences are felt and where, sometimes, things actually do go 'bump in the night'.

With the help of Gatekeeper we will discover ghosts from the nations history who have found their way to Derby - Bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary, Queen of Scots for instance - tormented souls, holy ghosts, surgical spirits (haunted hospitals), commercial ghosts (in shops and offices), and haunted inns.

- The Brown Lady Of Raynham Hall -
Is she real ???

• 
• The Brown Lady, also known as 'Lady Dorothy' was often said to walk the corridors of Raynham Hall, Norfolk, England during the 1840s and 1850s.
• In 1855, three young men of the family saw her on the stairs and gave chase, but when they thought they have her cornered, she waved to them and vanished.
• The dress worn by the spectre was said to be of gold-spangled brown silk brocade.
• It was said that in the 1870s, the hauntings had ceased but on 16 December 1936, a photograph, allegedly of the Brown Lady, was published in Country Life magazine (the photo on the right).

Reason for their existence ???

• Haunting ghosts (though not purposeful ghosts, which remain unexplained) are thought to be formed like this.
• When a violent event occurs, such as a murder, an unknown force is generated to form a 'psychic image' at the spot where the death happened.
• The invisible image continues to exist by absorbing energy (such as heat) from the surrounding air.
• This could explain why the area of a haunting is usually cold.
• The image survives for many years as a faithful record of the original event.
• It can be seen by people who are sensitive to the psychic forces which created it.
• Gradually however, it fades away, becoming fainter and fainter until it vanishes competely.
